The modern classroom is more than just a place of academic learning; it is a complex social ecosystem where children aged 8–12 develop their fundamental understanding of empathy, identity, and conflict resolution. However, as education increasingly moves into digital spaces, the challenges of fostering a safe environment have intensified. The Erasmus+ Respect Connect project is stepping into this gap to ensure that inclusion and wellbeing remain at the heart of the school experience.
The Growing Challenge of Bullying
While schools have traditionally been the primary site for social development, the shift toward digital platforms has facilitated a migration of harassment into online spaces. According to the 2024 HBSC study by WHO/Europe, while the prevalence of school bullying has remained stable at 11% since 2018, cyberbullying has shown a marked increase.
This trend is reflected in alarming statistics across Europe:
- Greece: Approximately 32.4% of children are subjected to some form of bullying, yet one-sixth believe their schools do not adequately educate them on prevention (The Smile of the Child, 2023).
- Slovenia: A 2024 study found that 65% of girls and 55% of boys in primary schools have experienced cyberbullying in the past three years (Slovenian Safer Internet Centre, 2025).
- Spain: Research indicates that 6 out of 100 students are victims of school bullying, with cyberbullying increasing the sense of “immunity” among perpetrators (Díaz-Aguado, 2024).
- Turkey: Recent findings show that 33% of adolescents were subjected to in-person abuse, while 17% were victims of cyberbullying (Eyuboglu et al., 2021).
Impact: These issues negatively impact mental health and academic progress, often leading to anxiety and depression (Smith et al., 2008).
Fostering Inclusion through Empathy and SEL
The Respect Connect project addresses these systemic weaknesses by equipping teachers with resources to nurture Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). By fostering open conversations about sensitive topics, such as gender, sexual orientation, physical disabilities, mental health, race, and religion, the project empowers students to embrace diversity and stand against harassment.
To bridge these gaps, the project is developing:
- A Gamified App: An engaging tool that allows students to practice empathy and conflict resolution through interactive, age-appropriate scenarios.
- An Educational Kit: A comprehensive resource providing teachers with lesson plans to integrate bullying prevention into the daily school culture.
